The staging of breast development in girls (see Fig. 13.2) does not take into consideration the ultimate size or shape of the breasts, which is determined primarily by genetic and nutritional factors, but describes characteristics that are common to all girls. The earlier stages of breast development may be asymmetrical, with one breast developing more than six months before the other one starts to enlarge.
